Agni’s Withdrawal to the Forest and Identification with Āṅgirasa (अग्न्याङ्गिरस-इतिहासः)
अनया क्रुद्धया दृष्ट्या क्रुद्ध: कि मां करिष्यसि । नावजानाम्यहं विप्रान् देवैस्तुल्यानू मनस्विन:,स्त्री बोली--तपोधन! क्रोध न करो। ब्रह्मर्ष! मैं बगुली नहीं हूँ जो तुम्हारी इस क्रोधभरी दृष्टिसे जल जाऊँगी। तुम इस तरह कुपित होकर मेरा क्या करोगे? मैं ब्राह्मणोंका अपमान नहीं करती। मनस्वी ब्राह्मण तो देवताके समान होते हैं
anayā kruddhayā dṛṣṭyā kruddhaḥ ki māṃ kariṣyasi | nāvajānāmy ahaṃ viprān devais tulyān manasvinaḥ ||
A mulher respondeu: “Por que te enfureces por causa desse olhar irado? Em tua cólera, que poderias fazer-me? Eu não desonro os brâmanes; pois os brâmanes de ânimo elevado são iguais aos deuses.”
ब्राह्मण उवाच
The verse underscores restraint and reverence: anger is challenged as futile, and the ethical norm is affirmed that brahmins—especially the self-possessed and spiritually eminent—are to be treated as godlike and not insulted.
In a tense exchange, the woman responds to a brahmin’s wrathful gaze, questioning what harm his anger can do and asserting that she does not disrespect brahmins, whom she regards as equal to the gods.
