मधुकैटभवधोपाख्यानम्

The Account of the Slaying of Madhu and Kaiṭabha

कुमित्राण्यनपाश्रित्य कि वै सुखतरं ततः । यत्राहानि न गण्यन्ते नैनमाहुर्महाशनम्‌,बकने कहा--जो दिनके आठवें या बारहवें भागमें अपने घरपर भोजनके लिये केवल शाक पका लेता है परंतु कुमित्रोंकी शरणमें नहीं जाता, उस पुरुषको जो सुख प्राप्त है, उससे बढ़कर सुख और कया हो सकता है? जहाँ दिन नहीं गिने जाते--जहाँ प्रतिदिन अन्नकी प्राप्तिके लिये चिन्ता नहीं करनी पड़ती; वही सुखी है। उसे लोग अधिक खानेवाला अथवा पेटू नहीं कहते हैं

bakah uvāca — kumitrāṇy anapāśritya kiṁ vai sukhataram tataḥ | yatrāhāni na gaṇyante nainam āhur mahāśanam ||

Baka disse: “Que pode ser mais feliz do que isto—viver sem buscar refúgio em maus amigos? Nesse estado, os dias não são contados em cálculos ansiosos, e ninguém é marcado como grande comedor. Verdadeiramente contente é aquele que, em sua própria casa, cozinha simples verduras e vive sem a preocupação diária de obter alimento ou de se apoiar em companhia corrupta.”
