Kubera’s Fivefold Nīti and Protection of the Pāṇḍavas (वैश्रवणोपदेशः)
पज्चवर्षाणि वत्स्यामि विद्यार्थीति पुरा मयि । “अमिततेजस्वी अर्जुनने वहाँ भी अपना आगमन देखनेके लिये उत्सुक हुए हमलोगोंके साथ संकेतपूर्वक यह प्रतिज्ञा की थी कि मैं अस्त्रविद्याका अध्ययन करनेके लिये पाँच वर्षोतक देवलोकमें निवास करूँगा ।। अत्र गाण्डीवधन्वानमवाप्तास्त्रमरिन्दमम्,'शत्रुओंका दमन करनेवाले गाण्डीवधारी अर्जुन अस्त्रविद्या प्राप्त करके पुनः देवलोकसे इस मनुष्यलोकमें आनेवाले हैं। हमलोग शीघ्र ही उनसे मिलेंगे”! ऐसा कहकर पाण्डुनन्दन युधिष्ठिरने सब ब्राह्मणोंको आमन्त्रित किया
vaiśampāyana uvāca | pañca-varṣāṇi vatsyāmi vidyārthīti purā mayi | atra gāṇḍīva-dhanvān avāptāstram arindamam |
Vaiśampāyana disse: “Outrora, na minha presença, ele assinalou um voto: ‘Habitarei por cinco anos como estudante, para aprender.’ Agora Arjuna, o portador do Gāṇḍīva, obteve a ciência das armas e retorna do mundo dos deuses ao reino humano—ele, o subjugador de inimigos—em breve o encontraremos.” Dizendo isso, Yudhiṣṭhira, filho de Pāṇḍu, convidou todos os brâmanes.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The passage highlights disciplined learning and fidelity to one’s vow: Arjuna’s power is grounded in a defined period of studenthood undertaken for knowledge, and Yudhiṣṭhira’s response reflects dharmic leadership—honoring learning, anticipating rightful strength, and showing respect to brāhmaṇas through invitation and hospitality.
A report is given that Arjuna, after staying in Devaloka for five years as a student to acquire astravidyā, has obtained weapons and is returning to the human world. Hearing this, Yudhiṣṭhira expresses confidence that they will soon meet Arjuna and proceeds to invite the brāhmaṇas.
