Rājarṣi-samāgamaḥ — Yudhiṣṭhirasya Dharma-parīkṣā ca

Meeting the Royal Sage and a Dharmic Audit

पुनरेवं न कर्तव्यं मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम्‌ । अनुशिष्य तु कौन्तेयं पद्मानि परिगृह्मु च,“यदि मेरा प्रिय करना चाहते हो तो फिर ऐसा काम न करना।” भीमसेनको ऐसा उपदेश देकर उन्होंने पूर्वोक्त सौगन्धिक कमल ले लिये और वे देवोपम पाण्डव उसी सरोवरके तटपर इधर-उधर भ्रमण करने लगे। इसी समय शिलाओंको आयुधरूपमें ग्रहण किये, बहुत-से विशालकाय उद्यानरक्षक वहाँ प्रकट हो गये। भारत! उन्होंने धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर, महर्षि लोमश, नकुल-सहदेव तथा अन्यान्य श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणोंको विनयपूर्वक नतमस्तक होकर प्रणाम किया। फिर धर्मराज युधिष्ठिरने उन्हें सान्त्वना दी। इससे वे निशाचर (राक्षस) प्रसन्न हो गये। तदनन्तर वे कुरुप्रवर पाण्डव धनाध्यक्ष कुबेरकी जानकारीमें कुछ कालतक वहाँ आनन्दपूर्वक टिके रहे और गन्धमादन पर्वतके शिखरोंपर अर्जुनके आगमनकी प्रतीक्षा करते रहे

punar evaṁ na kartavyaṁ mama ced icchasi priyam | anuśiṣya tu kaunteyaṁ padmāni parigṛhṇu ca ||

Disse Vaiśaṃpāyana: “Se desejas fazer o que me agrada, não tornes a agir assim.” Tendo assim instruído Bhīmasena, ele tomou os lótus Saugandhika mencionados anteriormente. Então os Pāṇḍavas, esplêndidos como deuses, vagaram pela margem daquele lago. Nesse mesmo instante surgiram muitos guardas do jardim, enormes, empunhando rochas como armas. Ó Bhārata, eles se curvaram respeitosamente e prestaram saudações a Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira, ao grande sábio Lomāśa, a Nakula e Sahadeva, e a outros brāhmaṇas eminentes. Yudhiṣṭhira então os tranquilizou, e aqueles seres que vagueiam na noite (rākṣasas) ficaram satisfeitos. Depois disso, com o conhecimento de Kubera, os Pāṇḍavas — os mais ilustres dos Kurus — permaneceram ali por algum tempo, felizes, aguardando nos picos de Gandhamādana a chegada de Arjuna.

The verse centers on ethical restraint and receptivity to guidance: if one seeks to please a respected elder/guide, one should not repeat a wrongful or rash act. Correction (anuśāsana) is paired with a constructive directive—gather the lotuses properly—showing that dharma involves both stopping harm and doing the right action in the right way.

After Bhīma is admonished, the Saugandhika lotuses are taken up. The Pāṇḍavas linger by the lake, when Kubera’s formidable garden-guards appear. They respectfully salute Yudhiṣṭhira, Lomāśa, and the others; Yudhiṣṭhira pacifies them, winning their goodwill. With Kubera’s knowledge, the Pāṇḍavas remain on Gandhamādana, awaiting Arjuna’s return.
