Gaṅgā-Tīrtha Darśana and the Prelude to the Yavakrīta–Indra Exemplum
Bandī uvāca—ahaṃ putro varuṇasyota rājñas tatrāsa satraṃ dvādaśavārṣikaṃ vai | satreṇa te janaka tulyakālaṃ tadarthaṃ te prahitā me dvijāgryāḥ ||
Bandin disse: “Ó rei Janaka, eu sou filho do rei Varuṇa.
The verse foregrounds the ethical tension between ritual ambition and moral conduct: even when framed as serving a grand sacrifice, forcibly sending Brahmins away ‘by a pretext’ raises questions about dharma, consent, and the limits of ritual justification.
Bandin identifies himself as Varuṇa’s son and explains why many Brahmins disappeared from Janaka’s court: he had sent chosen Brahmins to Varuṇa’s realm to serve a parallel twelve-year satra being conducted there, using the excuse of drowning/submerging them.
