जामदग्न्यस्य विलापः, प्रतिज्ञा, क्षत्रिय-निग्रहः, दानयज्ञश्च
Jāmadagnya Rāma’s Lament, Vow, Kṣatriya Suppression, and Gifts
विलप्यैवं सकरुणं बहु नानाविध॑ नृप । प्रेतकार्याणि सर्वाणि पितुश्नक्रे महातपा:,राजन! इस प्रकार भाँति-भाँतिसे अत्यन्त करुणा-जनक विलाप करके शत्रुओंकी राजधानीपर विजय पानेवाले महातपस्वी परशुरामजीने अपने पिताके समस्त प्रेतकर्म किये। भारत! पहले तो उन्होंने विधिपूर्वक अग्निमें पिताका दाह-संस्कार किया, तत्पश्चात् सम्पूर्ण क्षत्रियोंके वधकी प्रतिज्ञा की
vilapyaivaṁ sakaruṇaṁ bahu nānāvighaṁ nṛpa | pretakāryāṇi sarvāṇi pituḥ cakre mahātapāḥ ||
Rāma disse: “Ó rei, depois de lamentar longamente, de muitas maneiras, com profunda compaixão, o grande asceta realizou todos os ritos funerários de seu pai. Tendo devidamente entregue o corpo do pai ao fogo, então jurou a destruição dos Kṣatriyas.”
राम उवाच
The verse juxtaposes two powerful impulses: dharma as filial duty (performing the full funerary rites for one’s father) and the dangerous escalation of grief into a sweeping vow of vengeance. It highlights how righteous obligations can coexist with, yet be morally strained by, anger and retribution.
Paraśurāma, overwhelmed with compassionate grief, laments in many ways and completes his father’s obsequial rites, including cremation. Afterward, he makes a fierce vow aimed at the Kṣatriya class, setting the stage for retaliatory violence.
