Nāvyāśrama-nirmāṇa and Ṛśyaśṛṅga’s Distraction (नाव्याश्रमनिर्माणम्—ऋश्यशृङ्गस्य विचलनम्)

Lomaśa uvāca — sā tu nāvy āśramaṃ cakre rāja-kāryārtha-siddhaye | saṃdeśāc caiva nṛpateḥ sva-buddhyā caiva bhārata ||
Lomaśa disse: “Ó Bhārata, então ela construiu um eremitério sobre um barco, a fim de cumprir o propósito do rei. Agindo tanto pela mensagem do soberano quanto pelo seu próprio discernimento, pôs-se a realizar o seu desígnio.”
लोगश उवाच
The verse highlights how royal objectives are pursued through planning and initiative: an agent acts on the king’s directive while also applying personal discernment. Ethically, it raises the tension between political expediency and the moral ambiguity of using contrived appearances (a ‘hermitage’ on a boat) to achieve an end.
Lomaśa continues recounting a mission carried out on a king’s behalf: a woman constructs an ashram-like setting on a boat so the king’s plan can succeed, following the king’s message and her own strategy.
