Āraṇyaka-parva, Adhyāya 1 — The Pandavas’ Exit from Gajasāhvaya and the Citizens’ Lament

Educational Q&A

Moral and spiritual progress depends greatly on association: keeping company with people who are pure in learning, birth/lineage, and conduct is itself a powerful source of merit—sometimes valued even above mere textual study—while association with the wicked leads to sharing in their sin.

In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, a general ethical principle is stated to frame the value of satsaṅga (good company): even without performing formal Vedic rites like Agnihotra, one gains merit by living among the virtuous; conversely, one accrues demerit by mixing with the sinful.
