Duryodhana’s Reassurance and Force-Praise to Dhritarashtra

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights ethical accountability: personal ambition can draw elders and allies into limitless distress, and actions done “to please” a favored person may still be morally blameworthy—especially when they harm others and erode rightful wealth.

In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war negotiations, Duryodhana speaks to an elder (addressed as “narottama”), acknowledging that the listener has suffered greatly on Duryodhana’s behalf and that the listener’s sons have helped diminish others’ wealth—implying complicity in the Kauravas’ unjust acts leading toward war.
