Chapter 49: Sañjaya’s Enumeration of the Pāṇḍava Coalition (पाण्डवसैन्यसमागम-वर्णनम्)
य॑ं यक्ष: पुरुषं चक्रे भीष्मस्य निधनेच्छया । महेष्वासेन रौदट्रेण पाण्डवा अभ्ययुज्जत
yaṁ yakṣaḥ puruṣaṁ cakre bhīṣmasya nidhanecchayā | maheṣvāsena raudreṇa pāṇḍavā abhyayujjata |
Sañjaya disse: “O Yakṣa, desejando a morte de Bhīṣma, moldou um homem; e então os Pāṇḍavas avançaram contra aquele feroz e grande arqueiro.”
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights how deliberate intention (nidhanecchā) and extraordinary means—even supernatural intervention—can be marshaled toward violent ends, reminding the reader to examine motives behind action and the ethical weight of seeking another’s death.
Sañjaya reports that a Yakṣa, aiming at Bhīṣma’s death, produced or arranged a formidable warrior; the Pāṇḍavas then moved to confront and engage this fierce, renowned archer.
