yotsye tvayā raṇe rāma sadṛśenādhikena vā | guruṇā dharmaśīlena jayam āśāsva me vibho ||
Bhīṣma disse: “Ó Rama (Paraśurāma), quer sejas meu igual na batalha ou até superior, és meu mestre venerável, firme no dharma. Lutarei contigo neste campo; portanto, ó poderoso, concede-me tua bênção para a vitória.”
Even in unavoidable conflict, dharma requires maintaining reverence for one’s teacher and acknowledging moral authority; Bhīṣma upholds the guru’s dignity while affirming his own kṣatriya resolve to fight.
In the Bhīṣma–Paraśurāma confrontation, Bhīṣma addresses Paraśurāma as his dharmic guru, declares his intent to fight him in battle, and paradoxically requests the guru’s benediction for victory—highlighting the tension between duty and personal reverence.
