Bhishma’s appraisal of Pandava-aligned chariot-warriors
The verse highlights disciplined restraint: true strength is not only the capacity to destroy an opponent’s confidence and life, but also the ability to hold back when bound by circumstance, propriety, or a larger dharmic consideration.
Bhīṣma addresses Karṇa sharply, asserting that despite his old age he could shatter Karṇa’s battle-confidence and end his life—yet he refrains due to an implied constraint (‘if it were not for this’), underscoring tension within the Kaurava camp and Bhīṣma’s authority as elder and commander.
