रथायुतानि चत्वारि हया: पञ्चगुणास्तथा । पत्तिसैन्यं दशगुणं गजानामयुतानि षट्‌,सेनाके पिछले आधे भागमें राजा विराट, सोमकवंशी द्रुपदकुमार धृष्टद्युम्न, सुधर्मा, कुन्तिभोज और धृष्टद्युम्नके पुत्र जा रहे थे। इनके साथ चालीस हजार रथ, दो लाख घोड़े, चार लाख पैदल और साठ हजार हाथी थे

rathāyutāni catvāri hayāḥ pañcaguṇās tathā | pattisainyaṁ daśaguṇaṁ gajānām ayutāni ṣaṭ ||

Vaiśampāyana disse: “Havia quatro ayutas de carros; os cavalos eram cinco vezes esse número; a infantaria, dez vezes; e os elefantes somavam seis ayutas.” Trata-se de uma contagem precisa das forças em marcha, lembrando que a guerra não é apenas fala heroica, mas a mobilização de vastas vidas e recursos, tornando mais grave o conflito que se aproxima.
