The verse underscores how grave moral and social breakdown (approaching fratricidal war) is mirrored by ominous portents in nature. Such signs function as ethical warnings: when rulers and warriors abandon dharma, the world itself seems to signal impending catastrophe.
Sanjaya reports terrifying supernatural omens to Mādhava: a rain of flesh and blood and the apparition of a luminous ‘Gandharva-city’ in the sky. These are presented as forewarnings of the destructive war that is about to unfold.
