Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 130: Kuntī’s Instruction on Rājadharma and Daṇḍanīti

रोमकूपेषु च तथा सूर्यस्येव मरीचय: । त॑ दृष्टवा घोरमात्मानं केशवस्य महात्मन:,समस्त रोमकूपोंसे सूर्यके समान दिव्य किरणें छिटक रही थीं। महात्मा श्रीकृष्णके उस भयंकर स्वरूपको देखकर समस्त राजाओंके मनमें भय समा गया और उन्होंने अपने नेत्र बंद कर लिये। द्रोणाचार्य, भीष्म, परम बुद्धिमान्‌ विदुर, महाभाग संजय तथा तपस्याके धनी महर्षियोंको छोड़कर अन्य सब लोगोंकी आँखें बंद हो गयी थीं। इन द्रोण आदिको भगवान्‌ जनार्दनने स्वयं ही दिव्य दृष्टि प्रदान की थी (अतः वे आँख खोलकर उन्हें देखनेमें समर्थ हो सके)

romakūpeṣu ca tathā sūryasyeva marīcayaḥ | tāṃ dṛṣṭvā ghoram ātmānaṃ keśavasya mahātmanaḥ ||

Vaiśaṃpāyana disse: De cada poro do magnânimo Keśava irrompiam raios como os feixes do sol. Ao verem aquela manifestação formidável e assombrosa de Kṛṣṇa, o medo tomou os reis reunidos e eles fecharam os olhos. Apenas alguns—como Droṇa, Bhīṣma, o sapientíssimo Vidura, o nobre Sañjaya e rishis ricos em austeridade—puderam continuar a olhar, pois o próprio Janārdana lhes concedera visão divina. O episódio ressalta que a verdade espiritual e o poder divino não são apreendidos pela percepção comum; a clareza do olhar é um dom conquistado por disciplina, integridade e graça.

Educational Q&A

The divine cannot be apprehended by ordinary senses; true perception requires inner fitness and, ultimately, grace. The kings’ fear and inability to look contrasts with those granted divya-dṛṣṭi, highlighting that moral and spiritual preparedness shapes what one can face and understand.

Kṛṣṇa reveals an awe-inspiring, radiant form from which sun-like rays stream. The gathered kings are overwhelmed and close their eyes, while select figures—Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Vidura, Sañjaya, and ascetic seers—continue to behold it because Kṛṣṇa grants them divine sight.
