Treat the narrator/reciter as one’s own guru and please him with devotion; sanctify the occasion by praising the gods and especially Nara–Nārāyaṇa—highlighting gratitude to the transmitter of sacred knowledge and devotional remembrance as proper religious conduct.
Vaiśampāyana gives a prescriptive instruction about how one should behave during/around the telling of the sacred account: honor the kathā-vācaka (reciter) as guru and engage in kīrtana of the deities, including Nara and Nārāyaṇa.
