अश्रद्दधानश्न भवेद्‌ विनाशमुपगच्छति । सम्बद्धो वारुणै: पाशैरमर्त्य इव मन्यते,पापी मनुष्य पापकर्मके द्वारा धन पाकर हर्षसे खिल उठता है। वह पापी चोरीसे ही बढ़ता हुआ पापमें आसक्त हो जाता है और यह समझकर कि धर्म है ही नहीं, पवित्रात्मा पुरुषोंकी हँसी उड़ाता है। धर्ममें उसकी तनिक भी श्रद्धा नहीं रह जाती और पापके ही द्वारा वह विनाशके मुखमें जा पड़ता है। वह अपनेको देवताओं-सा अजर-अमर मानता है; परंतु उसे वरुणके पाशोंमें बँधना पड़ता है

aśraddadhānaś ca bhaved vināśam upagacchati | sambaddho vāruṇaiḥ pāśair amartya iva manyate ||

Bhīṣma disse: O homem que perdeu a fé no dharma caminha para a ruína. Preso pelos laços de Varuṇa, ainda assim imagina-se imortal. O pecador, ao ganhar riqueza por atos pecaminosos, exulta; cresce pelo roubo, apega-se ao mal, nega que exista dharma e zomba dos de coração puro. Sem qualquer reverência pela retidão, o próprio pecado o impele à destruição—crendo-se como os deuses, sem velhice e sem morte, mas inevitavelmente apanhado nos vínculos de Varuṇa.
