Cāturāśramya-dharma—Marks of the Four Āśramas (चातुराश्रम्यधर्मः)

क्षत्रिय ब्रह्मचारी धर्मपालनकी इच्छा रखकर अनेक शास्त्रोंके ज्ञानका उपार्जन तथा गुरुशुश्रूषा करते हुए अकेला ही नित्य ब्रह्मचर्य-आश्रमके धर्मका आचरण करे। यह बात ऋषिलोग परस्पर मिलकर कहते हैं ।। सामान्यार्थे व्यवहारे प्रवृत्ते प्रियाप्रिये वर्जयन्नेव यत्नात्‌ । चातुर्वर्ण्यस्थापनात्‌ पालनाच्च तैस्तैयोंगिर्नियमैरौरसैश्ल,जनसाधारणके लिये व्यवहार आरम्भ होनेपर राजा प्रिय और अप्रियकी भावनाका प्रयत्नपूर्वक परित्याग करे। भिन्न-भिन्न उपायों, नियमों, पुरुषार्थों तथा सम्पूर्ण उद्योगोंके द्वारा चारों वर्णोकी स्थापना एवं रक्षा करनेके कारण क्षात्रधर्म एवं गृहस्थ-आश्रमको ही सबसे श्रेष्ठ तथा सम्पूर्ण धर्मोंसे सम्पन्न बताया गया है; क्योंकि सभी वर्णोके लोग उस क्षात्र- धर्मके सहयोगसे ही अपने-अपने धर्मका पालन करते हैं। क्षत्रियधर्मके न होनेसे उन सब धर्मोका प्रयोजन विपरीत होता है; ऐसा कहते हैं

indra uvāca | kṣatriyo brahmacārī dharmapālanecchayā nānāśāstrajñānopārjanaṃ guruśuśrūṣāṃ ca kurvan eko nityaṃ brahmacaryāśramadharmam ācaret—iti ṛṣayaḥ parasparaṃ saṃmilitā vadanti || sāmānyārthe vyavahāre pravṛtte priyāpriye varjayann eva yatnāt | cāturvarṇyasthāpanāt pālanāc ca tais tair yogair niyamair aurasaḥ puruṣārthaiḥ sarvodyogaiś ca kṣātradharmaṃ gṛhasthāśramaṃ caiva sarvaśreṣṭhaṃ sarvadharmasampannaṃ prāhur yato hi sarvavarṇāḥ kṣātradharmasahāyena svadharmaṃ pālayanti | kṣātradharmābhāve teṣāṃ sarvadharmāṇāṃ prayojanaṃ viparītaṃ bhavatīti vadanti ||

Indra disse: “Um kṣatriya que assumiu a disciplina de brahmacārin deve, com a intenção de sustentar o dharma, estudar muitos śāstras e servir ao seu mestre; com autocontrole, deve praticar constantemente os deveres do brahmacarya-āśrama, mesmo vivendo em solidão—assim declaram, em concordância, os videntes. E quando começarem os tratos públicos e os assuntos comuns, o rei deve abandonar cuidadosamente gostos e aversões pessoais. Porque, por meios diversos, disciplinas, esforços legítimos e empenho completo, ele estabelece e protege as quatro varṇas, a tradição proclama o kṣātra-dharma—junto com o āśrama do chefe de família (gṛhastha)—como o mais excelente e pleno em dharma; pois todas as varṇas só conseguem manter seus deveres com o apoio do kṣātra-dharma. Sem o dharma do kṣatriya, diz-se que o propósito de todos esses dharmas se inverte e se torna contrário ao seu fim.”

A ruler-in-training must combine disciplined study and service to the teacher with strict self-restraint, and once engaged in public governance must renounce personal bias (likes/dislikes).
