अध्याय ५७ — राज्ञः नित्यप्रयत्नः, रक्षा-प्रधानता, तथा त्याग-नीतिः

Chapter 57: Constant Royal Vigilance, Primacy of Protection, and Principles of Dismissal

द्विट्छिद्रदर्शी नृपतिर्नित्यमेव प्रशस्यते । त्रिवर्ग विदितार्थश्न युक्तचारोपधिश्व॒ यः:,शत्रुओंके छिद्र देखनेवाले राजाकी सदा ही प्रशंसा की जाती है। जिसे धर्म, अर्थ और कामके तत्त्वका ज्ञान है तथा जिसने शत्रुओंकी गुप्त बातोंको जानने और उनके मन्त्री आदिको फोड़नेके लिये गुप्तचर लगा रखा है, वह भी प्रशंसाके ही योग्य है

dviṭ-chidra-darśī nṛpatir nityam eva praśasyate | trivarga-viditārthaś ca yukta-cāropadhiś ca yaḥ ||

Disse Bhishma: O rei que mantém constantemente os olhos nas vulnerabilidades do inimigo é sempre louvado. Do mesmo modo, o governante que compreende os fins da tríplice busca humana—dharma, artha e kāma—e que sustenta uma rede bem ordenada de espiões e contraespiões para revelar os segredos do adversário e desfazer os desígnios de seus ministros, também é digno de elogio. A lição ética é que a prudência no governo une discernimento moral e vigilância na arte de Estado, para que o reino seja protegido sem negligência.
