The verse highlights how revered names and epithets arise from remembered sacred events: Gaṅgā’s association with Bhagīratha becomes a lasting marker of her sanctity and fame, emphasizing the cultural ethic of preserving meaningful origins (smṛti) behind holy names.
Vāyu recounts an ancient episode: while Bhagīratha lived near the riverbank, Gaṅgā sat on his lap. From this association she is said to have become known as Bhāgīrathī, and also by the name Urvaśī.
