Educational Q&A

It lays out the normative progression of āśrama-dharma: study the Vedas in brahmacarya, fulfill ancestral and social obligations through household life (including begetting sons and maintaining sacred fires), and then transition to vānaprastha with a sage-like mode of living.

In Bhīṣma’s discourse on dharma, a father instructs his son on the proper life-course for a twice-born man: education and discipline first, ritual and progeny in householdership, and finally withdrawal to the forest for contemplative living.
