Instruction on the Cessation of Craving

Educational Q&A

Kapila affirms that both Vedic testimony and disciplined reasoning that interprets the Veda (tarkaśāstra, such as Mīmāṃsā) function as āgama—authoritative means for understanding dharma—so inquiry is not opposed to revelation but serves to clarify it.

In the Śānti Parva’s instructional dialogue, Kapila is explaining standards of valid authority: he identifies the Veda-based tradition as āgama and includes interpretive logical treatises as āgama because they help decide the Veda’s intended meaning.
