चिरकारि-उपाख्यानम् / The Exemplum of Cirakārī: Deliberation Before Irreversible Action

न च पापकृतः पापान्मुच्यन्ते केचिदापदि । अपापवादी भवति यथा भवति धर्मकृत्‌ । धर्मस्य निष्ठा त्वाचारस्तमेवाश्रित्य भोत्स्यसे,पापाचारी मनुष्य आपत्तिकालमें कष्ट भोगकर भी उस पापसे मुक्त नहीं होते और धर्मका आचरण करनेवाले लोग आपत्तिकालमें भी पापका समर्थन नहीं करते हैं। आचार (शौचाचार-सदाचार) ही धर्मका आधार है; अतः युधिष्ठिर! तुम उस आचारका आश्रय लेकर ही धर्मके यथार्थ स्वरूपको जान सकोगे

bhīṣma uvāca | na ca pāpakṛtaḥ pāpān mucyante kecid āpadi | apāpavādī bhavati yathā bhavati dharmakṛt | dharmasya niṣṭhā tv ācāras tam evāśritya bhotsyase |

Os que cometem pecado não são, em nenhuma crise, libertos de suas faltas por si mesmos. Assim como o praticante do dharma não se torna defensor do pecado, do mesmo modo o alicerce firme do dharma é o ācāra: a conduta correta. Portanto, tomando refúgio apenas na boa conduta, poderás compreender e viver a verdadeira natureza do dharma, mesmo em meio à adversidade.

Moral responsibility does not vanish in times of crisis: wrongdoing is not erased merely because one suffers during adversity. Dharma rests on ācāra—consistent right conduct—and a truly righteous person does not justify sin even under pressure.

In the Śānti Parva, Bhishma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma after the war. Here he emphasizes that even in calamity one should not defend or normalize wrongdoing, and that the reliable guide to dharma is established good conduct (ācāra).
