यथा हिमवत: पार्श्व॑ पृष्ठ चन्द्रमसो यथा । न दृष्टपूर्व मनुजैर्न च तन्नास्ति तावता,जैसे मनुष्योंद्वारा हिमालय पर्वतका दूसरा पार्श्व तथा चन्द्रमाका पृष्ठ भाग देखा हुआ नहीं है तो भी इसके आधारपर यह नहीं कहा जा सकता कि उनके पार्श्व और पृष्ठ भागका अस्तित्व ही नहीं है। उसी प्रकार सम्पूर्ण भूतोंके भीतर रहनेवाला उनका अन्तर्यामी ज्ञानस्वरूप आत्मा अत्यन्त सूक्ष्म होनेके कारण कभी नेत्रोंद्वारा नहीं देखा गया है; अतः उतनेहीसे यह नहीं कहा जा सकता कि आत्मा है ही नहीं

bhīṣma uvāca | yathā himavataḥ pārśvaṁ pṛṣṭhaṁ candramaso yathā | na dṛṣṭapūrvaṁ manuṣyair na ca tan nāsti tāvatā ||

Disse Bhīṣma: Assim como as pessoas nunca viram o lado distante do Himalaia nem o reverso da lua, e ainda assim não se pode concluir por isso que esses lados não existam, do mesmo modo o Si mesmo que habita em todos os seres, o regente interior, é da natureza da consciência e extremamente sutil; porque não é visto pelos olhos, não se deve por isso dizer que o Si mesmo não existe.

Non-perception is not non-existence: the Self (Ātman), present within all beings as the inner ruler and of the nature of consciousness, is too subtle for the eyes; therefore its invisibility cannot be used to deny its reality.

In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma and higher knowledge, Bhishma teaches Yudhiṣṭhira using a concrete analogy (unseen sides of the Himalaya and the moon) to argue that the indwelling Self exists even though it is not directly seen.
