Adhyāya 199: Karma–Jñāna Causality and the Nirguṇa Brahman
Manu’s Instruction
सर्वमन्योन्यनिष्कर्षे निघृष्टं पश्यतस्तव । गच्छ लोकान् जितान् स्वेन कर्मणा यत्र वाउछसि,यह मेरा साथी कुछ भी धारण नहीं करता अथवा मुझपर भी इसका कोई ऋण नहीं है। यह सब खेल तो हमलोगोंने आपकी परीक्षा लेनेके लिये किया था। काल, धर्म, मृत्यु, काम, क्रोध और आप दोनों--ये सब-के-सब एक-दूसरेकी कसौटीपर आपके देखते-देखते कसे गये हैं। अब जहाँ आपकी इच्छा हो, अपने कर्मसे जीते हुए उन लोकोमें जाइये
sarvam anyonya-niṣkarṣe nighṛṣṭaṁ paśyatas tava | gaccha lokān jitān svena karmaṇā yatra vā icchasi ||
“Diante dos teus próprios olhos, todos nós fomos provados uns contra os outros em exame e escrutínio mútuos. Agora vai—entra nos mundos que ganhaste por teus próprios atos, onde quer que desejes.”
विरूप उवाच
That true worth is revealed through testing, and that one’s final attainment (the ‘worlds’ one reaches) is earned by one’s own karma—personal deeds and ethical conduct—rather than by mere claims or appearances.
Virūpa declares that the figures involved have been mutually ‘assayed’ in the presence of the listener, as part of a deliberate trial. With the test concluded, he grants permission to depart and enjoy the realms merited by the listener’s own actions, wherever the listener chooses.
