Description of the Path of Meditation
The body is an elemental compound and its sensory functions and vital heat can cease, but the jīvātmā is not annihilated by the body’s dissolution; death is not the destruction of the self.
In a didactic exchange in the Śānti Parva, Bharadvāja explains the moment when bodily sensation and heat are absent and the bodily fire is stilled, using it to clarify that the self departs without perishing.
