असंतोषादिदोष-निरूपणम्

On the Faults of Discontent and the Discipline of Detachment

इस विषयमें पूर्वकालमें राजा जनककी कही हुई एक गाथाका लोग उल्लेख किया करते हैं। राजा जनक समस्त द्वद्धोंसे रहित और जीवन्मुक्त पुरुष थे। उन्होंने मोक्षस्वरूप परमात्मतत्त्वका साक्षात्कार कर लिया था। अनन्तं बत मे वित्तं यस्य मे नास्ति किंचन । मिथिलायां प्रदीप्तायां न मे दह्युति किंचन,(उनकी वह गाथा इस प्रकार है--) दूसरोंकी दृष्टिमें मेरे पास बहुत धन है; परंतु उसमेंसे कुछ भी मेरा नहीं है। सारी मिथिलामें आग लग जाय तो भी मेरा कुछ नहीं जलेगा

anantaṃ bata me vittaṃ yasya me nāsti kiṃcana | mithilāyāṃ pradīptāyāṃ na me dahyati kiṃcana ||

As pessoas costumam citar uma antiga gāthā proferida outrora pelo rei Janaka. Embora aos olhos alheios parecesse possuir riquezas sem fim, interiormente estava livre de todos os pares de opostos e era um liberto em vida (jīvanmukta), tendo realizado o Paramātman, o Supremo Si, como a própria natureza do mokṣa. Seu verso declara: “Infinita, de fato, é a minha riqueza — e, no entanto, nada disso é meu. Ainda que toda Mithilā fosse consumida pelo fogo, nada do que é meu se queimaria.”
