Adhyāya 159 — Dāna–Dakṣiṇā, Āpaddharma Measures, and Prāyaścitta Classifications
दर्प: क्रोधो मद: स्वप्रो हर्ष: शोको5तिमानिता । एत एव हि कौरव्य दृश्यन्ते लुब्धबुद्धिषु,कुरुनन्दन! जिनकी बुद्धि लोभमें फँसी हुई है, उन मनुष्योंमें दर्प, क्रोध, मद, दुःस्वप्र, हर्ष, शोक तथा अत्यन्त अभिमान--ये ही दोष दिखायी देते हैं
darpaḥ krodho madaḥ svapno harṣaḥ śoko ’timānitā | eta eva hi kauravya dṛśyante lubdhabuddhiṣu ||
Disse Bhīṣma: “Ó descendente dos Kurus, naqueles cujo entendimento está enredado pela cobiça veem-se exatamente estes defeitos—arrogância, ira, embriaguez do orgulho, sonhos ilusórios, exaltação, tristeza e excessiva presunção.”
भीष्म उवाच
Greed corrupts discernment and gives rise to a predictable cluster of inner vices—arrogance, anger, pride-intoxication, delusive imagining, emotional highs and lows, and excessive self-conceit—thereby undermining dharma and sound judgment.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction to Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīṣma continues his ethical counsel, diagnosing the psychological and moral symptoms that appear in people whose minds are dominated by greed.
