Adhyāya 159 — Dāna–Dakṣiṇā, Āpaddharma Measures, and Prāyaścitta Classifications

इस प्रकार श्रीमह्ा भारत शान्तिपर्वके अन्तर्गत आपद्धार्मपर्वमें पवन-शाल्मलिसंवादविषयक एक सौ सत्तावनवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ ॥/ १५७ ॥। ऑपनऔक्रात बछ। अ्-क्ज अष्टपञ्चाशर्दाधिकशततमो& ध्याय: समस्त अनर्थोका कारण लोभको बताकर उससे होनेवाले विभिन्न पापोंका वर्णन तथा श्रेष्ठ महापुरुषोंके लक्षण युधिछिर उवाच पापस्य यदधिष्ठानं यतः पापं प्रवर्तते । एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रीतुं तत््वेन भरतर्षभ,युधिष्ठिरने पूछा--भरतश्रेष्ठ! मैं यथार्थरूपसे यह सुनना चाहता हूँ कि पापका अधिष्ठान क्या है और किससे उसकी प्रवृत्ति होती है?

Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: pāpasya yad adhiṣṭhānaṃ yataḥ pāpaṃ pravartate | etad icchāmy ahaṃ śrotuṃ tattvena bharatarṣabha ||

Assim se completou o capítulo cento e cinquenta e sete do Āpaddharma, dentro do Śānti Parva do Śrī Mahābhārata, acerca do diálogo entre Pavana e a árvore Śālmalī. Inicia-se agora o capítulo cento e cinquenta e oito: declarando a cobiça como causa de toda desventura, descrevendo os diversos pecados que dela procedem e os sinais dos mais excelsos grandes homens. Disse Yudhiṣṭhira: «Ó touro entre os Bharatas, desejo ouvir em verdade isto: qual é o fundamento em que o pecado se apoia, e de que o pecado nasce e se põe em movimento?»
