Dasyu-maryādā and Buddhi-guided Rāja-nīti (दस्युमर्यादा तथा बुद्धिप्रधान-राजनीति)

माता पिता बान्धवानां वरिष्ठौ भार्या जरा बीजमात्र तु पुत्र: । भ्राता शत्रु: क्लिन्नपाणिवयस्य आत्मा होक: सुखदुःखस्य भोक्ता,माता और पिता स्वाभाविक स्नेह होनेके कारण बान्धवगणोंमें सबसे श्रेष्ठ हैं, पत्नी वीर्यकी नाशक (होनेसे) वृद्धावस्थाका मूर्तिमान्‌ रूप है, पुत्र अपना ही अंश है, भाई (धनमें हिस्सा बँटानेके कारण) शत्रु समझा जाता है और मित्र तभीतक मित्र है, जबतक उसका हाथ गीला रहता है अर्थात्‌ जबतक उसका स्वार्थ सिद्ध होता रहता है; केवल आत्मा ही सुख और दुःखका भोग करनेवाला कहा गया है

mātā pitā bāndhavānāṁ variṣṭhau bhāryā jarā bījamātra tu putraḥ | bhrātā śatruḥ klinnapāṇivayasya ātmā hy ekaḥ sukhaduḥkhasya bhoktā ||

Brahmadatta disse: “Entre os parentes, mãe e pai são os primeiros, pois seu afeto é natural. A esposa é como a velhice encarnada, porque consome o vigor do homem; o filho é apenas a própria semente—uma porção de si. O irmão torna-se inimigo quando a riqueza deve ser dividida, e o amigo permanece amigo apenas enquanto sua mão está ‘molhada’—enquanto seu interesse é atendido. Na verdade, é o Si mesmo que se diz experimentar prazer e dor.”

Worldly relationships are often conditioned by biology, desire, and self-interest; therefore one should cultivate discernment and detachment. Ultimately, pleasure and pain are borne by one’s own Self, so responsibility for one’s experience and liberation cannot be outsourced to others.
