Apaddharma Determination: Dialogue of Viśvāmitra and the Śvapaca
'भैया! इस नेवलेसे मुझे बड़ा डर लग रहा है। इसलिये मैं तुम्हारे पीछे इस जालमें प्रवेश कर जाऊँगा, परंतु दादा! तुम मुझे मार न डालना, बचा लेना; क्योंकि जीवित रहनेपर ही मैं तुम्हारी रक्षा करनेमें समर्थ हूँ ।।
bhīṣma uvāca | ulūkāc caiva māṃ rakṣa kṣudraḥ prārthayate hi mām | ahaṃ chetsyāmi te pāśān sakhe satyena te śape ||
Bhishma disse: “Irmão! Tenho grande medo desta mangusta. Por isso entrarei nesta rede atrás de ti; mas, ó ancião, não me mates — salva-me, pois só vivo poderei proteger-te. E protege-me também da coruja; essa criatura vil de fato busca a minha vida. Amigo, juro-te pela própria Verdade: cortarei os teus laços.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse foregrounds ethical reciprocity and the sanctity of truth: one seeks protection from danger while binding oneself by a truthful oath to render help in return—truth (satya) functioning as moral guarantee.
A speaker (here attributed to Bhishma) asks a friend for protection from an owl that threatens his life, and in exchange promises—swearing by truth—to cut the friend’s bonds (pāśa), emphasizing mutual aid under threat.
