अथास्यासीदियं चिन्ता तत् प्राप्प सुमहद् भयम् । न्यौले और उल्लू--दोनोंका लक्ष्य बने हुए उस चूहेको बड़ा भय हुआ। अब उसे इस प्रकार चिन्ता होने लगी-- ।। आपपशद्यस्यां सुकष्टायां मरणे प्रत्युपस्थिते
athāsyāsīd iyaṃ cintā tat prāpya sumahad bhayam | nyaule ca ulūke—dvayor lakṣya-bhūtasya mūṣakasya mahad bhayam abhavat | athāsyaivaṃ cintā jāyate—āpadi prāptāyāṃ su-kaṣṭāyāṃ maraṇe pratyupasthite ||
Disse Bhishma: Então surgiu nele uma grave inquietação, e um grande medo o tomou. O rato, tendo-se tornado alvo tanto do mangusto quanto da coruja, ficou dominado pelo terror. Nessa calamidade extrema, com a morte já bem próxima, começou a pensar assim.
