Daṇḍotpatti-kathana (Origin and Function of Daṇḍa) — वसुहोम–मान्धातृ संवाद

धर्मयुक्ता द्विजश्रेष्ठा वेदयुक्ता भवन्ति च । बभूव यज्ञो वेदेभ्यो यज्ञ: प्रीणाति देवता:,धर्मयुक्त श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण वेदोंका स्वाध्याय करते हैं। वेदोंसे ही यज्ञ प्रकट हुआ है। यज्ञ देवताओंको तृप्त करता है। तृप्त हुए देवता इन्द्रसे प्रजाके लिये प्रतिदिन प्रार्थना करते हैं, इससे इन्द्र प्रजाजनोंपर अनुग्रह करके (समयपर वर्षाके द्वारा खेती उपजाकर) उन्हें अन्न देता है, समस्त प्राणियोंके प्राण सदा अन्नपर ही टिके हुए हैं; इसलिये दण्डसे ही प्रजाओंकी स्थिति बनी हुई है। वही उनकी रक्षाके लिये सदा जाग्रत्‌ रहता है

bhīṣma uvāca | dharmayuktā dvijaśreṣṭhā vedayuktā bhavanti ca | babhūva yajño vedebhyo yajñaḥ prīṇāti devatāḥ |

Disse Bhīṣma: “Os melhores entre os duas-vezes-nascidos firmam-se no dharma e se enraízam no Veda. Dos Vedas surgiu o sacrifício (yajña), e o sacrifício alegra os deuses.”
