Adhyāya 48 — Duryodhana’s Account of Tribute and the Provisioned Court

The verse frames repeated success and survival as rooted in bhāgadheya (destined allotment), warning that envy and obsessive scheming against the righteous can be self-defeating; it also shows how appeals to “fate” can be used rhetorically to redirect a king’s emotions and strategy.
Śakuni addresses Duryodhana, urging him not to envy Yudhiṣṭhira. He notes that despite Duryodhana’s repeated machinations against the Pāṇḍavas, they have continually escaped dangers, as if guided and safeguarded by their destined fortune.
