Jarāsandha–Bhīma Niyuddha-prastāvaḥ
Commencement of the Regulated Duel
तान् पाद्यमधुपकाह्िन् गवार्हान् सत्कृतिं गतान् | प्रत्युत्थाय जरासंध उपतस्थे यथाविधि,वे पाद्य, मधुपर्क और गोदान पानेके योग्य थे। उनका सर्वत्र सत्कार होता था। उन्हें आया देख जरासंध उठकर खड़ा हो गया और उसने विधिपूर्वक उनका आतिथ्य-सत्कार किया
tān pādyamadhupakārhān gavārhān satkṛtiṃ gatān | pratyutthāya jarāsaṃdha upatasthe yathāvidhi ||
Eram dignos das honras tradicionais da hospitalidade—água para lavar os pés, a oferenda de madhuparka e o dom de uma vaca—e por toda parte eram recebidos com respeito. Ao vê-los chegar, Jarāsandha levantou-se para saudá-los e, conforme o rito, prestou-lhes a devida acolhida.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights atithi-dharma: honored guests should be received with prescribed respect and offerings, and a ruler’s ethical stature is shown by observing proper hospitality and ritual propriety.
As the honored visitors arrive, Jarāsandha stands up to greet them and performs the formal acts of welcome—pādya, madhuparka, and the cow-gift—treating them according to established custom.
