The passage underscores dharma in the form of antyeṣṭi (last rites): even amid upheaval, the living must honour the dead with proper rituals, remembrance, and respect—especially by performing the funeral rites in a manner aligned with the departed person’s wishes and cherished associations.
After Vasudeva’s death, his wives and the women of the family follow the funeral procession. Arjuna and others take Vasudeva to a place he loved during his lifetime and perform the pitṛmedha, i.e., the cremation and concluding funeral observances.
