Even amid personal combat, a warrior’s immediate duty may shift to safeguarding a leader’s operational capacity—here symbolized by protecting the chariot-wheels. The verse highlights loyalty and battlefield responsibility: preserving the commander’s mobility can outweigh pursuing an individual opponent.
Sañjaya reports that, as Nakula turns back and moves toward the Kaurava forces, Karna’s son disengages from Nakula and quickly focuses on protecting Karna’s chariot-wheels, ensuring Karna’s chariot remains functional in the fight.
