Arjuna Breaks the Encirclement; Bhīma Reinforces
The verse frames a hard wartime duty in ethical terms: the pursuit of rightful glory, stable rule, and lasting welfare is linked to decisively removing a dangerous, morally compromised adversary. It reflects the epic’s idea that kingship and public good sometimes demand resolute action against adharma.
In the Karṇa Parva battle context, Sañjaya reports counsel urging the opposing side to make a determined effort to slay Karṇa, portraying him as a formidable and ethically wayward force whose fall is necessary for victory and the restoration of rule and well-being.
