Chapter 45
निरस्तनेत्रजिल्लान्त्रा वाजिन: सह सादिभि: । पतिताः: पात्यमानाश्ष क्षितौ क्षीणाश्ष शेरते
nirastanetrajihvāntarā vājiṇaḥ saha sādibhiḥ | patitāḥ pātyamānāś ca kṣitau kṣīṇāḥ śerate |
Disse Sañjaya: “Cavalos, com olhos, línguas e entranhas derramados para fora, jazem na terra — alguns já caídos, outros tombando ao serem abatidos — dilacerados e exaustos, com seus cavaleiros ao lado.”
संजय उवाच
The verse underscores the stark impermanence of bodily life and the grave human (and animal) cost of war; it implicitly cautions against delusion about glory, reminding that violence culminates in suffering and helplessness.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra the battlefield aftermath: horses, grievously wounded with organs protruding, lie dead or dying on the ground along with their riders, conveying the intensity and devastation of the fighting.
