अश्वत्थामा कुरूणां च ये प्रवीरा महारथा:
sañjaya uvāca | aśvatthāmā kurūṇāṃ ca ye pravīrā mahārathāḥ, aśvatthāmā kauravapakṣake pramukha-mahārathī vīraḥ śaurya-sampanna-mleccha-sainikaiḥ yuktaḥ nitya-matavāla-gajān varṣā-kāle meghān iva mada-dhārāṃ sravantān tāṃ ratha-senāṃ paścāt paścāt anvayāt |
Disse Sañjaya: Aśvatthāmā, junto dos mais eminentes heróis dos Kurus—grandes guerreiros de carro—seguia atrás daquela hoste de carros. No lado dos Kauravas, movia-se como mahāratha principal, acompanhado por ferozes tropas mleccha, valentes e aguerridas, e por elefantes sempre em cio, vertendo seu licor intoxicante como nuvens de chuva na monção.
