The verse underscores the human cost of war: beyond battlefield valor, the true aftermath is collective suffering—especially borne by families and women—highlighting an ethical warning about violence and its ripple effects across society.
This is a chapter-ending colophon: Sañjaya reports that a great cry of lamentation spread everywhere, and the women of the Bharata/Kuru household, overwhelmed by grief, broke down and wept.
