अशोचन्‌ पाण्डवास्तत्र क्षत्रियाश्व महारथा:

aśocan pāṇḍavās tatra kṣatriyāśva mahārathāḥ

Disse Sañjaya: Ali, os Pāṇḍavas — grandes guerreiros de carro, kṣatriyas verdadeiros — entristeceram-se. O verso realça o custo humano da batalha: mesmo os mais valentes e fiéis ao dever não ficam imunes à dor quando se deparam com a perda e as consequências da guerra.
