ध्यायते धृतराष्ट्राय सहसोत्पत्य दु:खित: । आचष्ट निहतं भीष्म भरतानां पितामहम्,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--भरतनन्दन! तदनन्तर एक दिनकी बात है कि भूत, वर्तमान और भविष्यके ज्ञाता एवं सब घटनाओंको प्रत्यक्ष देखनेवाले गवल्गणपुत्र विद्वान् संजयने युद्धभूमिसे लौटकर सहसा चिन्तामग्न धृतराष्ट्रके पास जा अत्यन्त दुःखी होकर भरतवंशियोंके पितामह भीष्मके युद्धभूमिमें मारे जानेका समाचार बताया

dhyāyate dhṛtarāṣṭrāya sahasotpatya duḥkhitaḥ |
ācakṣṭa nihataṃ bhīṣmaṃ bharatānāṃ pitāmaham ||
Vaiśampāyana disse: Saṃjaya, erguendo-se de súbito em aflição, foi até Dhṛtarāṣṭra, imerso em ansiosa reflexão, e informou que Bhīṣma — o avô dos Bharatas — fora derrubado no campo de batalha.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even before any explicit moral instruction, the narrative shows the ethical weight of war: the fall of a revered elder like Bhīṣma becomes a moral shock to the entire dynasty, revealing how adharma-driven conflict produces grief and destabilizes those who enabled it.
Sañjaya, distressed, abruptly rises and goes to the brooding Dhṛtarāṣṭra to deliver the battlefield news that Bhīṣma, the grandsire of the Bharatas, has been struck down.
