प्रावर्तयत संग्रामे शोणितोदां महानदीम् । मध्येन कुरुसैन्यानां पाण्डवानां च भारत
sañjaya uvāca |
prāvartayat saṅgrāme śoṇitodāṃ mahānadīm |
madhyena kuru-sainyānāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ ca bhārata ||
Sañjaya disse: No meio da batalha, Arjuna pôs em movimento um rio poderoso cujas águas eram sangue, correndo entre os exércitos dos Kurus e dos Pāṇḍavas, ó Bhārata. A imagem ressalta o terrível custo moral da guerra: mesmo quando travada por um fim justo, o campo fica encharcado de sofrimento, e a proeza heroica torna-se inseparável da tragédia que ela cria.
