तस्मिन्नयुतशो राजन भूयशश्व परंतप: । भीष्म: शान्तनवो योधाञ्जघान परमास्त्रवित्,राजन! उत्तम अस्त्रोंके ज्ञाता तथा शत्रुओंको संताप देनेवाले शान्तनुनन्दन भीष्मने उस युद्धमें कई अयुत योद्धाओंका संहार कर डाला
tasminn ayutaśo rājan bhūyaś ca parantapaḥ | bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo yodhān jaghāna paramāstravit ||
Disse Sañjaya: «Naquela batalha, ó rei, Bhīṣma—filho de Śāntanu, flagelo dos inimigos e supremo conhecedor das armas celestes—repetidas vezes abateu guerreiros às dezenas de milhares. O verso ressalta a força avassaladora de sua maestria marcial e, ao mesmo tempo, insinua o sombrio peso moral do morticínio em massa numa guerra em que o dharma se encontra fraturado.»
