जिज्ञासुह्दोष पुत्रस्य बलस्य तव कौरव: । संग्रामे युद्धातो राजन्नागत: परवीरहा,“राजन! तुम इनके पुत्र हो। ये शत्रुवीरोंका संहार करनेवाले कुरुकूलतिलक अर्जुन संग्राममें जूझते हुए तुम-जैसे बेटेका बल-पराक्रम जानना चाहते थे। वत्स! इसीलिये मैंने तुम्हें युद्धके लिये प्रेरित किया है। सामर्थ्यशाली पुत्र! तुम अपनेमें अणुमात्र पापकी भी आशंका न करो

jijñāsuḥ doṣa-putrasya balasya tava kauravaḥ | saṅgrāme yuddhato rājann āgataḥ paravīrahā ||

Vaiśaṃpāyana disse: “Ó rei, tu és filho de Doṣa. Arjuna, matador de heróis inimigos e ornamento da linhagem Kuru, voltou do campo de batalha após lutar, desejoso de conhecer tua força e bravura. Por isso, querido filho, eu te incitei ao combate. Filho poderoso, não abrigues em ti nem o menor temor de pecado neste assunto.”

Educational Q&A

The verse frames battle, when undertaken in the proper role and purpose, as compatible with dharma: the addressee is urged to act without moral paralysis, being told not to fear even a trace of sin when fulfilling the duty expected of a capable son and warrior.

Vaiśaṃpāyana reports that Arjuna has returned from fighting and is eager to assess the addressee’s strength (as Doṣa’s son). Because of this desire to test/know the son’s prowess, the speaker explains why the youth was encouraged to enter combat.
