Brahmā’s Enumeration of Primacies (Ādi) and the Supremacy of Knowledge

Jñāna

शब्दस्यादिस्तथा55काशमेष भूतकृतो गुण: । गन्धोंका आदि कारण भूमि है। रसोंका जल, रूपोंका ज्योतिर्मय आदित्य, स्पर्शोंका वायु और शब्दका आदिकारण आकाश है। ये गन्ध आदि पज्चभूतोंसे उत्पन्न गुण हैं ।। अतः: परं प्रवक्ष्यामि भूतानामादिमुत्तमम्‌,अब मैं भूतोंके उत्तम आदिका वर्णन करता हूँ। सूर्य समस्त ग्रहोंका और जठरानल सम्पूर्ण प्राणियोंका आदि बतलाया जाता है। सावित्री सब विद्याओंकी और प्रजापति देवताओंके आदि हैं

vāyudeva uvāca — gandhasyādi-kāraṇaṃ bhūmiḥ; rasasyāpaḥ; rūpasya jyotirmaya ādityaḥ; sparśasya vāyuḥ; śabdasya ādikāraṇam ākāśaḥ. ete gandhādayaḥ pañca-bhūtebhya utpannā guṇāḥ. ataḥ paraṃ pravakṣyāmi bhūtānām ādim uttamam. sūryaḥ samasta-grahāṇām ādiḥ, jaṭharānalaḥ sarva-prāṇinām ādiḥ ucyate. sāvitryāḥ sarva-vidyānām āditvaṃ, prajāpatiś ca devatānām ādiḥ.

Vāyu disse: “A terra é a primeira causa do olfato; a água, do paladar; o Sol radiante, da forma; o vento, do tato; e o espaço, do som. Estas—o olfato e as demais—são qualidades que surgem dos cinco grandes elementos. Agora declararei a suprema fonte primordial entre os seres: o Sol é dito a origem entre todos os planetas, e o fogo digestivo (jāṭharāgni) a origem que sustenta todas as criaturas vivas. Sāvitrī é a nascente de todos os ramos do conhecimento, e Prajāpati o primeiro entre os deuses.”
