अध्याय ९ — धृतराष्ट्रस्य युधिष्ठिरं प्रति राजनित्युपदेशः
Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Counsel on Royal Policy to Yudhiṣṭhira
उत्तरीयै: करैश्नापि संच्छाद्य वदनानि ते । रुरुदु: शोकसंतप्ता मुहूर्त पितृमातृवत्,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--जनमेजय! कुरुराजकी ये करुणाभरी बातें सुनकर वहाँ एकत्र हुए कुरुजांगलदेशके सब लोग दुपट्टों और हाथोंसे अपना-अपना मुँह ढँककर रोने लगे। अपनी संतानको विदा करते समय दुःखसे कातर हुए पिता-माताकी भाँति वे दो घड़ीतक शोकसे संतप्त होकर रोते रहे
uttarīyaiḥ karaiś cāpi saṃchādya vadanāni te | ruruduḥ śokasaṃtaptā muhūrtaṃ pitṛmātṛvat ||
Vaiśampāyana disse: Cobrindo o rosto com suas vestes superiores e também com as mãos, eles choraram. Queimados pela dor, choraram por algum tempo, como pais aflitos no momento de se separarem do próprio filho.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the universality of grief and the ethical tenderness of shared mourning: when a righteous leader’s painful words are heard, the community responds with empathy, reminding the listener of impermanence and the human cost of separation.
After the Kuru king speaks words filled with sorrow, the assembled people of Kuru-jāṅgala cover their faces with garments and hands and weep for a time, likened to parents crying when sending their child away.
