Chatra–Upānah Dāna: Origin Narrative
Jamadagni–Reṇukā–Sūrya Saṃvāda
ऋषिस्तथा गालवो<थाष्टकश्न भरद्वाजो5रुन्धती वालखिल्या: । शिबिर्दिलीपो नहुषो<म्बरीषो राजा ययातिर्धुन्धुमारो5थ पूरु:,राजन! ऐसा निश्चय करके शुक्र, अंगिरा, विद्वान् कवि, अगस्त्य, नारद, पर्वत, भृगु, वसिष्ठ, कश्यप, गौतम, विश्वामित्र, जमदग्नि, गालव मुनि, अष्टक, भरद्वाज, अरुन्धती, वालखिल्यगण, शिबि, दिलीप, नहुष, अम्बरीष, राजा ययाति, धुन्धुमार और पूरु--ये सभी राजर्षि तथा ब्रह्मर्षि वज्रधारी महानुभाव वृत्रहन्ता शतक्रतु इन्द्रको आगे करके यात्राके लिये निकले और सभी तीर्थोमें घूमते हुए माघ मासकी पूर्णिमा तिथिको पुण्यसलिला कौशिकी नदीके तटपर जा पहुँचे
ṛṣiḥ tathā gālavaḥ atha āṣṭakaḥ bharadvājaḥ arundhatī vālakhilyāḥ | śibiḥ dilīpaḥ nahuṣaḥ ambārīṣaḥ rājā yayātiḥ dhundhumāraḥ atha pūruḥ ||
Bhishma disse: “E do mesmo modo os sábios—Galava, Ashtaka, Bharadvaja, Arundhati e os videntes Valakhilyas—junto com os sábios régios Shibi, Dilipa, Nahusha, Ambarisha, o rei Yayati, Dhundhumara e Puru—tendo firmado essa decisão, partiram em jornada sagrada, colocando à frente Indra, portador do vajra e matador de Vritra. Peregrinando pelos tīrthas, chegaram enfim, na lua cheia do mês de Māgha, à margem do santo rio Kaushiki.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse elevates tīrtha-yātrā (pilgrimage) as a disciplined, collective act rooted in firm resolve (niścaya), where sages and righteous kings seek merit through sacred travel and association with exemplary beings—symbolized by placing Indra, the upholder of cosmic order, at the forefront.
Bhishma lists a distinguished assembly of sages and royal sages who, after deciding upon a pilgrimage, travel through many sacred sites and arrive on Māgha full moon at the Kauśikī River’s holy bank, with Indra leading the procession.
