Origin and Prohibitions in Śrāddha
गव्येन दत्तं श्राद्धे तु संवत्सरमिहोच्यते । यथा गव्यं तथा युक्त पायसं सर्पिषा सह,यदि श्राद्धमें गायका दही दान किया जाय तो उससे पितरोंको एक वर्षतक तृप्ति होती बतायी गयी है। गायके दहीका जैसा फल बताया गया है, वैसा ही घृतमिश्रित खीरका भी समझना चाहिये
bhīṣma uvāca | gavyena dattaṃ śrāddhe tu saṃvatsaram ihochyate | yathā gavyaṃ tathā yuktaṃ pāyasaṃ sarpiṣā saha ||
Disse Bhishma: No rito de śrāddha, quando se oferece uma dádiva feita de produtos da vaca, declara-se aqui que isso satisfaz os Pitṛs (os Pais ancestrais) por um ano inteiro. E o mesmo resultado ensinado para o alimento derivado da vaca deve ser entendido também para o pāyasa, o pudim de arroz com leite, preparado juntamente com manteiga clarificada (ghee).
भीष्म उवाच
Bhishma teaches that specific śrāddha offerings—especially cow-derived foods—are credited with long-lasting satisfaction of the ancestors, and that pāyasa prepared with ghee is to be regarded as having the same efficacious result.
In the Anushasana Parva’s instruction on dharma and rites, Bhishma is explaining to the listener the relative fruits (phala) of different śrāddha offerings, specifying the duration of ancestral satisfaction attributed to cow-derived gifts and to ghee-mixed pāyasa.
